Always a priest, never a groom

I can never figure this guy out. The last place I met him was a seedy bar in a rough neighborhood, and here I am at the Bel Air of beach neighborhoods. Not only is the community gated, but the house has its own gated entrance. I press the button on the gate call box and the doors slide open. There, in all its glory, stands a mammoth of a home right in front of the beach. It’s near dark, so I can see that the lights are on inside. Someone is walking from the side yard toward the driveway where I am parked. I step out to find Michael soaking wet, only wearing a pair of palm tree printed board shorts.

“It’s a beautiful night for a swim,” he exclaims.

I follow him around the side of the house to the patio out back. He grabs the towel sitting on the bench in front of us and dries his face.

“You do know that shark attacks are most common this time of night, right?” I ask, knowing full well that he’s not afraid.

He bends over holding his stomach in laughter. “You get me every time, Amos. Let’s take a seat by the garden and chat.”

I follow him around to a garden. A stone path leads us into a circular-shaped oasis surrounded by a ring of bright, fuchsia encore azaleas. In the center sits a fire pit surrounded by a royal blue patio sectional.

He gestures for me to sit with him. “I know you have been wondering if God has only prepared you to be of service to Leo.” I nod in admittance. “Although, that has been a very important part of your calling, it is not your only purpose. In five months, you will still be in contact with Hollis and Leo, but not solely at their disposal.” What kind of bomb are you going to drop on me now?

He clears his throat, “Your career as a priest was practice in the grand scheme of things. Amos, when the dust settles and you all crawl out of hiding, they will need someone to guide them, spiritually. Someone to monitor their faith and orchestrate the fellowship they will need to carry on.”

I feel my chest tighten and my heart beats its way into my throat. I don’t understand. “I thought my role as a priest was over. You have to understand...I’ve imagined my life differently now. Even when you assigned me to assist Leo. I thought the connection we had…”

“Your title will never be priest again, but you will continue to be married to Abba until you’ve fulfilled your mission.” He reaches for my shoulders and pulls me toward him. “You are going to have a country of people looking to you for hope. Faith-driven people who love and live for Abba. It’s every past priest’s dream man! Your heart will be so full, you won’t have room for a romantic relationship.” He grins ear to ear and motions for me to follow him towards the mansion.
